British Humanist Association slams Ofsted on Sex Education
A new study by the British Humanist Association (BHA) has found that Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) was mentioned in less than 1 per cent of inspection reports.
Personal, social, health, and economic education (PSHE) was mentioned in 14 per cent of Ofsted reports.
The BHA study Healthy, happy, safe? has been published as Education Secretary Justine Greening faces mounting pressure to make the teaching of SRE compulsory in all schools.
Chief Executive Andrew Copson said: "Successive UK governments have, for too long now, only paid lip service to the importance of personal, social, health, and economic education (PSHE), including sex and relationships education (SRE), in English schools.
"This has manifested itself not only in the repeated failure of government to make the subject compulsory, but also in the failure even to update the official SRE guidance for schools since the year 2000."
The British Humanist Association is the national charity working on behalf of non-religious people.
