DfE criticised for ‘pervasive’ errors in financial statements
The National Audit Office (NAO) has provided an adverse opinion on the truth and fairness of the Department for Education’s (DfE’s) financial statements.
The report from the spending watchdog criticised the DfE for the level of error and uncertainty in the statements, which it claims are ‘material and pervasive’.
It marks the second time in two years the DfE has been issued an adverse opinion and identifies that the department has exceeded two of its expenditure limits authorised by Parliament.
Additionally, Amyas Morse, the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG), has advised that the DfE has ‘many challenges to overcome’ if it is to provide parliament with a better picture of academy trusts’ spending next year.
