Ofsted inspections cancelled for last week of term

Ofsted inspections will be cancelled next week, an email to head teachers has said, with schools only inspected if there are safeguarding concerns.

The inspections have been cancelled so schools can use the final days of term to consider Covid contingency measures for January.

Paul Whiteman, general secretary of school leaders’ union NAHT, said: “While this is something that should have happened weeks ago, we are pleased to see today’s guidance sets out that Ofsted inspections will not take place next week – this is something we have been repeatedly pushing for.

“Ofsted inspections are the very last thing schools need given the current level of disruption due to Covid, and the pressure school leaders are under just to stay open and minimise disruption for learners. Pupils will be best served by their schools not being distracted by preparation for inspection.

“Clearly, one week goes nowhere near far enough and we will be pushing for this suspension to be extended into the new year.”
