New data published by the NSPCC shows that the Report Abuse in Education helpline, launched on 1 April, received 513 calls up to 30 June, of which 97 were referred to external agencies such as the police and local authorities.
Commissioned by the Department for Education, the Report Abuse in Education helpline was set up after thousands of testimonies alleging child sexual abuse and harassment in schools were posted on the Everyone’s Invited website.
Some of the concerns mentioned to the helpline include harmful sexual behaviour, peer-on-peer sexual abuse and historic abuse.
Information about the caller was known in 185 contacts which resulted in advice or a referral. Of these, 96 were from adult or child victims of which 63 were female, 28 male and five unknown. A further 50 were from parents concerned about their child.
The helpline has been extended until October as part of the response to the Ofsted Review.
