Scheme to improve maths in Welsh schools unveiled
A new scheme to improve how maths is taught in Schools in Wales is set to be launched.
The education secretary Kirsty Williams will announce the National Network for Excellence in Mathematics at a school in Cardiff alongside maths expert Dr Hannah Fry, who will talk about how to make maths more compelling for pupils.
Just over £3 million is being invested by the Welsh government into the network.
It will involve schools, colleges and universities and the four regional education consortia - working together to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics and numeracy in Wales, in support of new curriculum developments.
The scheme focuses on extra support to develop leadership in maths and help schools work together in support of higher standards; and supporting teachers, teaching assistant, further education lecturers and others to develop improved classroom practice.
In addition, schools and colleges will receive guidance, access to conferences and events on effective teaching practice, alongside a new online maths zone on the Hwb learning website and new evidence-based professional development programmes for teaching staff to improve their maths knowledge.
