Crackdown on bad parking outside schools in Suffolk
EB News: 26/07/2019 - 15:50
Enforcement on bad parking outside schools will get tougher across Suffolk under new plans.
Powers are set to be transferred from Suffolk police to district and borough councils in the near future, as stretched police resources have been unable to make parking outside schools a priority.
Among the measures are plans for no stopping markings between 8am and 4.30pm on weekdays.
It is not yet clear when parking enforcement powers will transfer, as delays in Brexit negotiations has meant the Parliamentary timetable has been unable to accommodate the legislation change needed, Ipswich Star has reported.
To date, only Ipswich Borough Council has the delegated powers to carry out those responsibilities.
Conservative cabinet member for highways Mary Evans said: "Parking outside school entrances is one we hear a lot from residents who are fed up and cannot get past.
"It's a road safety issue with kids crossing the road.
"I don't think there is anyone with a primary school that hasn't got a parking problem
"It's an issue so we need to make sure parking is planned away from the school gates so it is safe."
A new survey by the British Council has revealed that more than two thirds (67%) of primary school age children say they would like to spend more time at school learning a language.
Forty-four per cent of education professionals are unfamiliar with the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, otherwise known as Martyn’s Law, according to new research.
