New guidance on curriculum planning for NI schools

The Northern Ireland Executive has published advice and support to help schools consider how to adapt delivery of the curriculum to support recovery when pupils return for the new academic year.

Education Minister Peter Weir said: “I want to thank all the teachers and staff who are working so hard to ensure our pupils are supported at this time. I hope that schools and teachers will find the guidance provided by the Department helpful to support pupils’ learning as they plan for the new term.

“The Northern Ireland Curriculum is designed to have limited prescription, giving schools as much flexibility as possible in what they choose to teach, for how long and how often and to use approaches that best suit their pupils. In these unprecedented times schools, therefore, have the freedom to provide lessons to suit the unique circumstances of their school community.

“My Department, working with the Education Authority and other key stakeholders, will provide additional operational guidance for schools on curriculum development during the coming weeks and months.”
