EB News: 19/12/2024 - 09:50
This week, children of all ages visited Sellafield’s Engineering Centre of Excellence in Cumbria this week to learn about Sellafield’s work and explore their own potential and interest in engineering.
This is the fourth visit of its kind in recent years, and allows children with experience of being in care to be inspired and empowered to develop their own enthusiasm for engineering and the possibility of exploring it in further education.
The children from all across Cumberland were able to take part in various activities such as flying drones, piloting robots, and exploring virtual reality in a safe and exciting environment.
Invitations were sent out to foster families, young carers, kinship carers, and the children of social workers, as well as children in care, and was organised in collaboration with Cumberland Council and local children’s organisations.
Craig Branney, Sellafield Ltd head of off site developments, said: “I’m delighted to welcome some of the hardest to reach young people in our communities to come and have fun, learn something, and think about careers and opportunities they might not have considered before.
“This was the biggest events we’ve done with 70 children visiting and I’m very grateful to all the volunteers who gave up their time to help us.
“I’d also like to say a big thank you to Amentum, Forth and Resolve engineering for supporting us and providing presents for all the children.
“We have a wealth of talent and imagination in our communities, so we need to do everything we can to ensure everyone has access to the same opportunities to grow their potential.”
