Former Ofsted chief Wilshaw to help improve education in India

Sir Michael Wilshaw will work as an advisor to GEMS Education company to help set up a network of low-cost private schools in India, South East Asia and Africa.
The GEMS group was founded by education entrepreneur Sunny Varkey, who also funded the annual Global Teaching Prize.
Sir Wilshaw was born in northern India in Shimla, at the foothills of the Himalayas, before moving with his family to London at the age of two. He said: "I have the opportunity to go back to my roots.”
He continued: "Low-cost schooling is a very popular and growing choice for millions of Indian families.”
Wilshaw will be working with Tony Little, former head of Eton College, who is GEM group's chief education officer.
School food improvement programme Nourish is set to launch in Cumberland in 2026, working with schools to improve the quality and culture of food throughout the school day
A creative careers programme which aims to inspire young people to explore careers across the creative industries has reached 210,000 young people since 2023.
The government is inviting EdTech companies and AI labs to develop AI tutoring tools, in collaboration with teachers, to ensure they support classroom practice.
