BT Fleet Solutions hosted an open day for a girls to get an insight into engineering in the automotive industry, following recent statistics showing that just 14.4 per cent of the STEM workforce is female.
The event, hosted by Customer Experience lead in Fleet Solutions, Carol Baxter, and organised in partnership with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), showcased career opportunities within the automotive industry.
14 Key Stage 4 students from Handsworth Girls Academy in Birmingham, along with representatives from the DWP, were invited to an all-day event split between BT Fleet Solutions' HQ in Solihull and its garage in Hockley, Birmingham.
The girls were given an insight into the business, sitting with advisors while they took calls from customers to get a real feel for the job. They were then taken to BT Fleet Solutions’ garage in Hockley where they were able to gain first-hand experience of a day-in-the-life of a vehicle technician.
Antonina Robinson, MBE of the DWP Birmingham and Solihull Jobcentre for Schools, My Choice My Future employability programme, commented: “We are proud to have supported Handsworth Wood Girls Academy to engage in this fantastic opportunity with BT Fleet Solutions. The feedback from the pupils is amazing, they learnt so much about career opportunities and gained hands-on experience.”
Jackie Plimmer, Futures Manager at Handsworth Wood Girls Academy, said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for our students, they all got so much from it and their confidence levels have gone up so much. They had a fabulous time and all of the students came back with a smile and enthusiasm.”
“The feedback has been amazing, the girls loved the opportunity and openly talked about a career path in this field that would not have been something they would ever have considered.”
Henry Brace, Managing Director at BT Fleet Solutions commented: “It’s great to see young people so engaged around the opportunities that a career in engineering can bring. I hope this experience is something we can extend to more schools across our garage network locations in the future.”
BT Fleet Solutions is continuing to work in partnership with the Department of Work and Pensions to ensure they create the future employees of tomorrow.
