More than half of students who were admitted to Oxbridge last year came from a state school, figures show.
Oxford University’s admissions data for 2016 shows that 58 per cent of students who received a place came from a state school - the highest figure on record.
In addition, 62.5 per cent of state-school pupils were accepted at Cambridge compared with 62 per cent in 2015.
However, the figures are still disproportionately low as 93.2 per cent of England’s pupils are educated in the state sector.
Dr Samina Khan, director of undergraduate admissions and outreach at Oxford University, said: "These latest statistics are hugely encouraging and show the progress we are making towards our goal of attracting the best applicants from all backgrounds.”
