Scottish pupils benefit from STEM learning kits
EB News: 04/10/2017 - 11:09
Pupils at schools across Scotland are set to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) thanks to new learning kits.
Esh Border Construction has delivered a range of interactive tolls and props, also known as STEM kits, to schools with the aim to shape career aspirations from an early age.
Youngsters will now use the kits, which are based around STEM topics, to learn about the subjects in a series of workshops designed to educate and inspire the designers, builders and engineers of tomorrow.
Each kit includes construction-related books, toys and materials which support four student exercises: wall building, using ratios, measuring, and designing a structure.
Regional director of Esh Border Construction, Gerard McMahon said: “It is wonderful to see children getting enjoyment from the kits, exploring the practical ways in which STEM can be put to use, whilst gaining valuable hands-on knowledge and skills outside of a traditional classroom environment.
“STEM subjects have been identified as having a skills shortage but initiatives like this will help promote the topics to children in a fun and interactive way.”
A number of schools are set to receive the kits over the next academic year.
A report from the Digital Poverty Alliance show that while digital tools are now embedded across school routines, access and usability remain deeply uneven.
