Ofsted’s unregistered schools team, which investigates and inspects suspected illegal schools, has found 420 possible settings that may be unregistered between 1 January 2016 and 31 July 2018.
Of those, 274 inspections have taken place and 63 warning notices have been issued, up from 50 earlier in the year.
During this time, 55 settings have closed or ceased operating illegally and the remaining cases are still under active investigation. This is up from 38 in March.
An inspector issues a warning notice at the end of the inspection if she or he believes the setting is operating illegally as a school.
