Teachers' pay rises need to be ‘fully funded’

The Association of School of School and College Leaders (ASCL) has urged the government to ‘fully fund’ all pay rises in the education sector and remove the one per cent pay cap on teachers’ pay.

The ASCL has joined forces with other associations in writing to Education Secretary Justine Greening about the teacher pay problems, and why it urgently needs to be addressed. The letter was signed by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, the National Association of Head Teachers, the National Union of Teachers, the Voice Union and UCAC.

Sara Ford, ASCL’s Pay, Conditions and Employment Specialist, commented: “In partnership with five other teacher unions, we have submitted our response to the consultation on the School Teachers’ Review Body’s recommendations on the teachers’ pay award. We have again called on the government to fully fund the pay increases recommended, and the further pay increases that are clearly needed, including providing additional funding for the Welsh government to support increases in Wales.”
