Boost your child’s confidence and help them succeed with Kumon’s Maths and English study programmes
Kumon is the UK’s leading supplementary education provider. Established for over 50 years, Kumon’s unique Maths and English study programmes nurture confident, independent children with a passion for learning.
The Kumon programmes are tailored to the needs of each individual child and are therefore suitable for children of all ages and abilities. With Kumon study, children master a subject at their own pace whilst developing the independent study skills required for success.
As well as building speed and accuracy, the maths and English programmes develop abilities such as concentration, time management, self-motivation and problem-solving; abilities which will prepare students for a successful future. As a result, children can improve their all-round academic performance and also gain the confidence to tackle new challenges both in and outside of the classroom.
When students start on a Kumon programme, they do so at a comfortable level, consolidating familiar topics and filling in any gaps before moving on to something new. As children grow, each child’s appetite and ability for learning will develop at a different pace, and so Kumon focuses on their individual needs – ensuring they progress at a level that is right for them.
The maths programme stretches from counting to calculus – all without the use of calculators. The English programme aims to develop students’ ability to read and understand a wide variety of texts, nurturing a life-long habit of reading and covering the basics of letter formation right up to critical analysis.
Children attend their local study centre once or twice a week for around half an hour per subject studied. Here they complete individually tailored work, and are given daily worksheets to take away so they can keep up with their studies at home. At the centre, the Kumon Instructor also monitors their progress, setting new and eventually unfamiliar work and encouraging them to take ownership of their learning. The essence of this support is guidance rather than explanation: helping students to apply what they have already learned to solve work they have never seen before. It is through this on-going experience that the seeds of self-confidence are sown and children can feel able to discover and succeed by themselves.
Alyson Smith, mother of Kumon students Leanne and Olivia, says:
“Kumon has become an integral part of our lives and had a positive, lasting effect on the girls. We have really seen their academic and personal skills develop since starting their Kumon study. Their confidence has also grown and they aren’t afraid to work hard; now they persevere with exercises until the task is completed. As we all know, this is a key skill in adulthood too and one that will help them to lead successful and fulfilling lives.”
The Kumon programmes complement classroom learning. Not only are maths and English key to academic success, but the study skills and self-learning abilities they gain through the Kumon programmes will stand them in good stead for adult life, as well as for the pressures of homework, coursework and timed exams.
13 year old Aimee Chiu studies at the Merton Park Kumon Study Centre. She says:
“I enjoy everything about Kumon. It is fun challenging myself to do better each day than the day before. Kumon has helped me to never give up and to keep trying, no matter how hard you find something. It has not only helped me in school but also in other aspects of my life. It helps you to motivate yourself and the feeling of accomplishment cannot compare to anything else.”
Kumon was established in Japan over 50 years ago by Toru Kumon, a father and maths teacher who wanted to help his son. In 1954 Toru Kumon created a series of carefully sequenced materials for his son who was struggling with maths. Through daily practice and a commitment to mastering each concept, the young boy improved his maths skills and gained the ability to solve maths problems well beyond his school level.
As Toru Kumon's neighbours heard about the success of his son they began asking him to work with their children. To meet this spontaneous demand, the first Kumon study centre was opened in 1956. 55 years later, the Kumon programmes are available in 47 countries across the globe and are studied by over four million children.
