Corby, UK. 14th August 2008: RS Components has secured a framework agreement with the National Universities Working Party on Electronic Components (NUWPEC), a nationally co-ordinated committee formed by the universities regional purchasing consortia in 1993.  On behalf of the consortia, NUWPEC ensure value for money procurement of electronic & electrical tools, components and service aids, batteries, test & measurement equipment, mechanical tools and fixings.  The agreement recognises RS Components as a key supplier of all six product categories tendered by the committee.

The selection criteria used by NUWPEC to assess all tenders was very demanding and the tender evaluation saw RS highly commended.

“Winning this contract reinforces RS’ strength as a leading distributor of electronic components,” commented Ian Mason, CEO at RS. He continued, “NUWPEC actively seeks suppliers that offer products of the highest quality at the best price.  Being selected as a NUWPEC supplier demonstrates that the RS service delivers these standards.  We are extremely proud to serve this community and value the importance of the students, who provide industry with the engineers and customers of tomorrow.”

The agreement is available to all HE purchasing consortia members in the UK* (including the majority of the Russell Group of Universities, which is an association of major research-intensive universities) and the UK research councils.

David Johnson, Chairman of NUWPEC added, “The joint award to RS Components is the culmination of a tender process that commenced in November 2007. The new framework agreement will offer all the members of the six university purchasing consortia throughout the UK an improved range of quality products at competitive prices.  We have recognised the improvements the company has made, particularly over the past few years and we look forward to working with them, developing our relationship and seeing the many benefits they can bring to the HE sector over the coming years”.

Malcolm Turnbull was looking into improving the availability for the UK’s largest online garden centre Crocus.co.uk. Instead of making an expensive purchase he chose to make his own clustered pair of load balancers on commodity hardware running an open source software stack. This was then made into a commercial product and sold as an appliance.
