More Scottish youngsters than ever find a positive post school destination
More than half of 2008/9 leavers went into further or higher education.

A survey has found that 58 per cent of Scottish school leavers in 2008/9 went into further or higher education.

A follow up survey carried out in March of the estimated 53,000 young people who left school in 2008/09 also found that nearly 30 per cent went into employment and 4.4 per cent into training.

Overall, 85.1 per cent, an increase from 84 per cent the previous year, of young people found a positive destination leaving school.

Skills Minister Keith Brown said: "It is extremely encouraging to see that the support we are providing young people is helping them to find positive destinations that are right for them whether that is university, college, a job or modern apprenticeship."

"These figures show that record levels of pupils are staying at school or going straight into college or university."
