School offers pupils relaxation meditation |
|
Technique helps students to settle down and handle their emotions.
Pontville School in Ormskirk, Lancashire, is introducing its pupils to relaxation meditation.
The secondary school on Black Moss Lane is for students who have speech, language and social communication difficulties.
It is one of eight schools and six children’s homes run by The Witherslack Group, which offers education and residential care to children and young people with special educational needs.
Teachers participating in the sessions have found it beneficial and have noted that meditation has benefitted students with settling down and handling their emotions.
Iain Sim, Head Teacher at Pontville School, said: "A lot of our students struggle with issues of anger management, low self esteem and anxiety, and we found that meditation helped a number of students to calm down and increase their self-awareness." "We are now offering introductory taster sessions across the school. This will be followed up by a more extensive study and assessment of the benefits of meditation in areas such as concentration and well-being."
