School Food Trust project sees rise in school meal numbers |
|
‘Band system’ allowing students to choose main meal at start of the day maximizes choice and reduces queuing
A School Food Trust consultancy project to evaluate the impact of effective marketing on school meal uptake has shown a rise of meal numbers by more than 10 per cent from January/February last year.
Rawmarsh Sandhill School in Rotherham is one of ten schools taking part in the project.
The school has undertaken a number of promotions and activities including Mexican and Oriental theme days, healthy eating promotions and opportunities for parents to enjoy a healthy school meal alongside pupils.
There has also been the introduction of the ‘band system', which gives pupils the opportunity to choose their main meal at the start of the day by selecting a certain coloured band.
This then guarantees the child their chosen meal at lunchtime, which in turn maximizes choice, increases satisfaction levels and reduces queuing times.
The school with the largest percentage increase in meal uptake when the project ends will win a £3,000 dining room makeover.
Councillor Shaun Wright, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People's Services said: "We are delighted that the meal uptake figures have increased by such a large percentage."
"We aim to make school meals fun for the children and they have certainly enjoyed taking part in all of the activities over the last few months."
