Nearly £6 million funding for after school sports clubs |
|
Range of sports available at Change4Life clubs include badminton and fencing.
Nearly £6 million of Government and Lottery money is being invested into 3,000 new after school clubs offering Olympic and Paralympic sports.
The new Change4Life school clubs in secondary schools and colleges across England will give young people of all abilities the opportunity to play a range of sports including badminton, fencing, table tennis, volleyball and wheelchair basketball.
The money will pay for new equipment and qualified coaches to run the clubs alongside young volunteers, and the first clubs will open in the Autumn tern this year, with all of them up and running by Spring 2011.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport will fund £3.38 million, the Department of Health will fund £1.5 million and a Lottery grant from Sport England will provide £1 million.
Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Ben Bradshaw said: "We hope this will be just the start and that schools across England build on this investment and deliver a network of clubs covering every Olympic sport, long after London’s closing ceremony."
