1000 schools enter The Times Spelling Bee 2010
Championship aims to make spelling fun.

1000 schools from around the UK have entered The Times Spelling Bee, the UK's only national spelling competition for schools.

The schools have each entered a team comprising of three 11 to 12-year-old children and a reserve for the local championships which start in Cineworld cinemas in March.

The successful schools will go forward to The Times Spelling Bee semi finals in May. The ten winning teams from the semi finals will then travel to London to compete in the Grand Final in June.

The aim of the championship is to make spelling fun, help teachers raise the profile of spelling and develop the talents of their students.

The Times Spelling Bee website has free spelling puzzles and games which can be used at home and in the classroom by adults and young people alike.

James Harding, Editor of The Times, said:  "After the success of the first ever Times national Spelling Bee, we are thrilled to be hosting the competition for the second year running.”

“One of the many things we learnt from the inaugural year was that spelling can be great fun.”
