Memory4teachers is distributing free memory sticks to all teachers and educational personnel throughout the UK
With growing pressure on schools to adhere to environmental policies as well as reduce expenditure on paper and ink consumed by teachers, the memory stick has become a fundamental and essential tool for teachers. This has demonstrated a proven reduction in the general stationary costs allowing schools to focus budgets in other much needed areas. For the past couple of years increasing numbers of educators have been using memory sticks in order to migrate their work between home and school. Unfortunately, some security issues have arisen with teachers mislaying their own USB memory devices, often containing personal data and sensitive information. In addition, cases have been reported of teachers migrating viruses on to school networks when transferring information. With many positives and some negatives surrounding the use of a memory stick, Memory4Teachers has developed a total solution for both teachers and schools.
The Solution Memory4Teachers has developed a 4GB USB memory device featuring full password security, virus protection and encryption software. In addition, the revolutionary memory sticks features a bespoke user interface specifically designed to support teachers on a daily basis. The interface provides access to various software applications including a diary, timetable, lesson planner, calculator, contacts list and even an MP3 music player. Many teachers have become actively involved in the development process of the project. Suggested features have included direct access to educational content and learning resources that support the National Curriculum. A dedicated area of the interface has been developed in order to provide a huge range of royalty-free educational resources and content that can be used by teachers. Memory4Teachers is launching the UK’s first Portable Learning Environment (PLE).
Portable Learning Environment A Portable Learning Environment enhances the era of interactive learning. This mobile device enables educators to conveniently carry a vast amount of material to support educational development and their own daily duties. The PLE does not require any internet access and can be used by educators on any PC, laptop, projector or interactive whiteboard.
The educational content featuring on the memory sticks has been provided by some well known educational organisations with teachers also providing some excellent resources that they themselves have used within the classroom. The lessons included are tailored to the National Curriculum Foci for each Key Stage. The schemes of work (SOWs) are designed with SEALs and PLTs at their core and promote collaboration between teachers and their pupils through a variety of activities. All of the content featured has clear objectives; lesson outcomes, a three part lesson structure, opportunities for differentiation and assessment, and most include homework tasks. Teachers can choose to use set lessons or the resources can be easily adapted to suit a teachers own individual teaching style spanning all key stages. This easy-to-use interface is also pre-loaded with 18 content channels in order to simplify the navigation of the device for the user.
Content Channels The 18 dedicated content channels enable teachers to obtain both educational and recreational information relating to their own personal interests. The content channels cover diverse areas such as Shopping, Finance, Travel, Sports, Music, Careers, Training, Education, the Environment and key topics such as the Building Schools for the Future programme (BSF). In order to enable users to keep the channels up-to-date with the latest developments, a supporting Web Channel can be accessed to download new content to the memory devices.
Supporting Web Channel The Web Channel allows teachers to ‘back-up’ their memory sticks and keep a copy of their content in a free-of-charge, password secure online storage area. This provides teachers with the freedom to tailor and install resources for their lessons on to the memory stick. In addition, the Web Channel provides free additional resources that teachers can download to their memory stick as well as key and useful information from project partners.
Project Partners The project is supported by several recognised organisations such as the National Union of Teachers, BESA, the Council for Subject Associations, the National Literacy Trust, ASCL as well as some well known charities and major educational organisations. There is no doubt that the 21st century is the era of interactive learning and the Memory 4Teachers’ Portable Learning Environment is taking teaching to that next level. Due to the success of the project free memory sticks are also going to be provided to all students. For further details please access www.memory4students.co.uk
