ClusterScale was born out of Loadbalancer.org on January 1st 2008. Loadbalancer.org was the product of an engineer “scratching an itch”. Malcolm Turnbull was looking into improving the availability for the UK’s largest online garden centre Crocus.co.uk. Instead of making an expensive purchase he chose to make his own clustered pair of load balancers on commodity hardware running an open source software stack. This was then made into a commercial product and sold as an appliance.
